Digital Detox Finding Spiritual Balance in a Hyper-Connected World

Digital Detox: Finding Spiritual Balance in a Hyper-Connected World.

In a world that seems to have become an extension of our fingers, where social media determines our perception of reality, people have realized that they require another form of accumulation one rooted in spiritual growth and quality interrelationship, rather than further phone bombardment.
A buildup in technology means cached information and temporary files which build up, slowing the devices. It is a technical term that can be used as the potent metaphor of our spiritual lives. Phones also require cleaning to work properly, and our souls do too.

The Digital Overload Epidemic.

On average, individuals are spending in excess of six hours daily at the screen and among the youths, it is higher. We are constantly getting notified, are supposed to respond to emails and our feeds keep on updating indefinitely. This distraction and mind trash renders us anxious, distracted and spiritually drained.
Research indicates that too much time on the screen increases the level of depression, anxiety and loneliness. We are more attached with technology than ever before, but most of us are more alienated emotionally and spiritually.
It is ironical that we have accessed the knowledge in this world through the devices that we own, but we are unable to get ourselves a peaceful five minutes to listen to God. We refine ideal online personalities and our internal existence is crumbling.

The Spiritual Price of Being Connected All the Time.

Digital noise is devastating to the spiritual:

Prayer becomes perfunctory. It is uncomfortable, almost impossible to sit quietly in the presence of God with the constant mental stimulation. We are in a hurry to complete devotional schedules to get the next notification.
Scripture loses its power. The Bible requires attention, contemplation, and reflection, which are fading away in the modern world due to constant scrolling.
Community suffers. Face-to-face interactions, eye contact and leisurely conversation are required in real relationships, which are lacking during scrolling when we tend to listen half-heartedly.
Worship gets shallow. True worship is the outburst of hearts that perceive the beauty and goodness of God. The silent grandeur of God does not suffice when we yearn to have something new always.

Another Way: Deliberate Digital Discipline.

It does not solve to give up technology or be a Luddite. We should not and cannot live without devices. Technology used prudently can enhance bondage, enhance productivity and even lead to spiritual enrichment.
The trick here is intentionality having limits so that digital accumulation does not push out the spiritual.

Digital Detox Practical Steps.

Create tech‑free zones. Phone-free pick space, such as the dinner table, the bedroom, or the sanctuary of the church. In such areas, the presence should substitute the notification.
Establish Sabbath rhythms. As God did after he created, we should have frequent breaks after consumption. Make a 24 hours period once in the week to unplug the social media, news and entertainment to connect with God, family and yourself.
Substitute the scrolling with stillness. As you get the desire to pick your phone, stop. Breath in three times, consider what you really require; need to connect, need to distract, need to be off boredom? And then take that need to God and pray.
Apply technology strategically. Previous to opening an app, question: Why am I opening this app? How long will I stay? What will I do when I leave? Stop being passive, and become purposeful.
Focus on in-person communication. Take time to have a chat with your friends and relatives. Move into a small group where you are able to open up in life. Minister with other people in your congregation. It is these analog interactions that feed the soul in a manner that cannot be done through the digital.

The Promise of a Clean Heart

The psalmist asked God to make him a clean heart, a clean heart, (Psalm 51:10). The shriek of that outcry of renewal has resounded over the ages, it is yet our very greatest need.
Spiritual detox is just like emptying our phones until its functions go back to normal and we are able to hear God, love other people and live a purposeful life. The accumulation of the past is cleared, and all is clear, calm, and new interest in that which really matters.
This is not a one time occurrence but a lifetime training. Every day the digital rubbish keeps accumulating; the noise of the world is constantly on the verge of overwhelming our spiritual faculties. Frequent silence, seclusion, reading of the Scriptures and praying purge the accumulation and bring our hearts into a new path towards God.

A Call to Reset

In case you feel that digital accumulation has overrun spiritual richness, then be hopeful. God asks us to still and to know (Psalm 46:10). Not judgmental, but patient, he is able to bring us back to the central need in a soft manner; that is, sitting at His feet, listening to Him, being at rest with Him.
In this day, look at your e-habits. Where has buildup occurred? What limitations do you think God would dare you to impose? What would it be to spend ten minutes scrolling instead of ten minutes of silent time in the presence of the Lord?
The choice is yours. The invitation stands. And the promise will come true: with all their hearts they will find Him.

There are many applications in the Google Play store that will
allow you to increase you device's usable RAM; though the
process is a bit tricky.

In laptops and personal computers, users have the luxury to expand
the Random Access Memory or RAM, which is crucial to a device's
performance. The same facility is not available in tablets and
smartphones.
However, there are applications which allow smartphone/tablet users
to expand their device's RAM by a substantial amount. Take the
Roehsoft RAM Expander for instance. We had used this app in one of
my devices, which has only 256 MB RAM and could not run even
some basic games. But after using the app, there was a noticeable
change in the device's performance.
However, keep in mind that such applications require your device to
be rooted and rooting a device voids its warranty. Also, rooting is
advisable only for advance users and you should not try rooting your
smartphone or tablet if you do not have thorough knowledge of its
functioning, as during the process you may end up killing your device
altogether.
Before we proceed, lets have a look at the properties of the Roehsoft
Ram Expander application. First of all, it is a paid application
available from Google Play store for a hefty price of Rs 499. According
to its developers, the app can increase the RAM of the device to 4
GB, which is a very tall claim as no tablet or smartphone as of now
comes with such huge RAM. The app uses the micro SD card's
storage.
Of course, since it claims to increase the RAM to 4 GB you need to
have a high capacity micro SD card. It's best if you have a 16 GB or
higher capacity card as you also need to use the micro SD card to
store your content. Also, go for a higher class micro SD card which
has a higher data transfer rate and is crucial for better device
performance.
Here is a step by step approach on how to use the app.
Step 1:
Before installing the Roehsoft Ram Expander application, you first
need to root your device. If you already have a rooted device just
download the app from Google Play store.
Step 2:
From the menu tray of your device, locate and run the application. On
opening, the app will ask you to choose your language - English or
Deutsch. Then it would ask for root access; just press ok to proceed
further. It will take just 10 seconds to complete the formality.

Step 3:
On reaching the home page of the app you will see the memory info
at the bottom that will tell you how much space is available in your
SD card that can be used as RAM; how much RAM is present in your
device and what would be the total RAM once you are done with the
process.
Step 4:
At the top, there are four icons - Swap active, Autorun, Notify icon,
Hypermode. Click Autorun and Hypermode while leaving the other
two. Click Notify icon, if you want the icon of the app into your
notification bar.
Step 5:
Just below the four boxes mentioned above there are slider bars -
Swapfile, swappiness, MinFreeKB. Swapfile slider tells you how much
free storage in your micro SD card can be used. So choose the
amount of SD card memory that you want to use as RAM by scrolling
the bar.
Step 6:
Then just click the Swap Activ box which will start the process
